Front Cover?

Faux Real Lighting Inspiration

After looking for the right image to sum up the lighting technique I hoped for I came across these images. As the clothing I'm using is going to be quite bright I wanted to tone the looks down through the lighting but to ensure the colours were still prominent. The two images below give a rough idea of what I would want, almost as if the images are over exposed but still very clear.

Barbarella

Lady of Leisure - Marie Claire Turkey

One of my favourite shoots that I came across was an editorial from Marie Claire Turkey. They really managed to capture the richness within the glamorous side of the 50's housewife. The whole shoot was extremely elegant.

Cinematic Editorial Inspiration

Had a look at editorials with a 1950's glamour concept to gather some ideas for my Cinematic shoot. Came across alot of Jewel and Jewel colours and pristene hair.

Jayne Mansfield

La Dolce Vita - Federico Fellini

The movie La Dolce Vita has been the primary basis of my inspiration for the Cinematic trend. Anita Ekberg is amazingly glamorous throughout the film. Her collection of evening and cocktail dresses do not fail to amaze. Herself and Anouk Aimee both are iconic stars and ooze pure Hollywood glamour.

Flame Haired Warrior: Vogue Nippon

Lovely inspiration for my Primal Futurism shoot. A nice idea - made me think of fur throws to use as cardigans and giant fur trimmed coats. Lots of leather trim and fire red hair. Lovely, lovely, lovely!

Faux Real Wardrobe Ideas

After wondering how I would approach the Faux Real trend with a unique idea I thought about making clothing from photographic PVC tablecloths. In the past I had seen many different designs including an underwater scene as well as cakes, flowers and sweets. Ideally I would like to make a selection of A-line skirts in the underwater print and the flower print. I feel that this idea is well suited to the trend as it plays on what real and whats not. Clearly the images are originally real, but the quality of the print will hopefully have the impact to play with people's ideas. I'd also like to work with a clear Pvc that is layered over different textures. My aim when shot in the studio is that the clothing will reflect the light in a really interesting way and create 3D like garment.

Todd Lynn’s primal instincts: Autumn / Fall 2010

Struggling to find a way to connect the Primitive side of the trend with the much more futuristic side without it looking crazy and mismatched. After searching through designer collections and runway shows I came across the designer Todd Lynn. For Autumn 2010 at London Fashion Week he produced a collection that infused futuristic toned leather with animal fur. The clever tailoring and modern cuts really gave it a unique space style, but the fur added a 'Planet of the Apes' twist.

Hepwright's

Popped into Hepwright's today after a discussion with Catherine, to have a scout around at the dresses for the 'Cinematic' shoot. I thought Hepwright's would be ideal and I was right. Some really amazing pieces in there. Hopefully going to borrow a few from the collection as theres no better way to achieve the vintage look than by using the real thing.

Emily Karlsson Interview Answers

Hi there!

No problem at all. Sure you can use my photos. I wouldn't mind.. Just take the ones you find inspiring or think would fit for the interview :) I actually think it would be better if you choose the photos!

Please, tell me if there is any question I took wrong or something, haha.

This was a fun interview btw! Thanks for doing it. Would be lovely if you could tell me when it's up!

Here's the answers anyway:

1. I love to look through magazines. Dansk, Zoo magazine an Love are good examples! I'm also very fascinated about the 65-70s fashion and the early 90s.

2. I wouldn't say that I have a favorite store really. But I love vintage and second hand and I think Beyond Retro, Emmaus, Lisa Larsson etc. is nice if your looking for fine vintage clothing. Otherwise I think Weekday can have some lovely things. Topshop unique ss11 is btw fantastique!

3. I've been checking out a pair of red shorts from Topshop unique. They haven't arrived to the store yet thought, but I'm keeping my eyes open! I'm also dreaming of the fantastic shades from Fendi's ss11 and a pair from Cacharel. Maybe some jewelry's from Proenza Shouler..

4. I think the fashion was lovely 2010 and a lot of it seems to come back in 2011. Like the creepers, colored hair, round sunglasses etc. I feel like it's pretty worn out. But I still like it though.

5. As is said before, I love the 70s and 90s. I don't really follow trends if there isn't something I really like. Otherwise I just put on whatever I think looks good and try to match that as good as possible, haha.

6. I think most of my inspiration comes from magazines, music, films etc.

7. Wow, I have no idea really. But I will probably wear the clothes I'm wearing now, haha. When I buy clothes I try to buy as "timeless" pieces as possible. It's always so boring to have clothes from last year that you'll never use again.. so I'm trying to avoid that by thinking forward and not buy things that I only fancy for the moment.

Love,
Emily

Font

The title font for the newspaper is going to be the Nilland font found on DaFont. It comes in six different weights and sizes.

I feel it is appropriate, as instead of having the typical times style font found on many papers, this adds a design element to the newspaper. It keeps inline with the fashion element of the publication as well as creating a unique logo for the brand.

Printers

After spend tedious amounts of time ringing around printers in Southampton and South Wales I have found it impossible to get a small quantity colour print on newsprint. I always knew this would be tricky but I did hope that there would be someone out there that would make it possible. After umm-ing and arr-ing and a little bit of panic, I've had to settle for a digital printed 'masterpiece' that will re create a newspaper with a little bit more high tech equiptment. It's going to lack that grainy look I craved but I'm sure the digital version will look a lot neater and prettier, as well as last pretty much double the time as if it was on Newsprint. Two bird with one stone, it has got to last the 6 months right?

Bulk

I've been thinking about whats going to fill the pages of the newspaper besides the content that I already have. I had already decided to add another blogger interview but have recently had second thoughts about this as I don't want the whole thing to be just editorials and internet based content. Especially as it would feel like alot of second hand information. After speaking to Andrew my tutor in a tutorial last week he thought it would be appropriate to feature alot of still life photography suited to each specific trend. I quite like the idea, but I'm struggling to find inspiration on how to photograph the items. I don't want it to look like the images found in the back page of Look or of similar magazines. It needs to be striking and with a difference.

I have also thought about including news style articles to keep inline with the newspaper theme. Something that could round up the trend, reviews of art and film appropriate to the trend to add extra inspiration. For example talking about Barbarella to add to the Primal Futurism theme.

Another feature I've thought about is streetstyle which would cover a double page spread, more than likely on the back two pages. But I fret that this may add too much work before the deadline. The panic of aiming to get the perfect images maybe something that could take weeks, even months to get right.

Publication Inspiration

I've been following Tourist magazine for quite sometime now and I've always been a huge lover of the photos, reviews and music featured. I like what they stand for and the way they feature a range of contributors. Their photos are beautiful and their style features are a lot more candid rather than editorial and I really appreciate this side of fashion. It's a little bit more underground, almost a little bit more original, doesn't seem to fussy but still manages to inspire.

Shoot Inspiration

I have never been a huge fan of high end, pristene fashion editorials. Much more a lover of the gritty images found in the likes of Vice and Tourist magazine. I want The Style Observer to follow in the tracks of such magazines as I have always admired the styling and imagery found in them. I usually work alongside a photographer from my hometown in South Wales as we went to college together and with his success as a photographer we have always collaborated really well. It's easy to talk to him and he understands the outcome of the images that I desire. For The Style Observer I wanted to branch out a little bit and work with photographers who produce images that I feel are more to my personal likening. After days and days of searching through Model Mayhem I came across Francesca Jane, who like me is from Newport. She originates from London but is studying photography at Newport University. After seeing her online portfolio I became a huge fan.
